Dual Cannula

Dual cannula tubes are inherently safer as the inner cannula may be removed quickly in the event of obstruction and are therefore preferred for patients who continue to require a tracheostomy tube after discharge from the hospital.

Tubes with inner cannulas should be used, when possible.

The inner cannula should be removed, cleaned, and reinserted at regular intervals. The frequency of these changes depend on individual patients’ requirements as determined by the volume and viscosity of secretions.
