How a Tracheostomy Works
Surgery (tracheotomy procedure) is done to make a small opening in the front of your neck into your trachea.
This opening is called a stoma.
A short tube (tracheostomy tube or trach tube) is inserted into the stoma.
One end of the trach tube rests inside your trachea, so when you breathe in, air flows through the tube and into your trachea and lungs.
When you breathe out, air goes back out through the tube.
