Laryngectomy tubes are always cuffless and usually shorter than a standard tracheostomy tube.
They are used to keep the tracheostoma open immediately after laryngectomy and to prevent tracheostoma stenosis (narrowing) in the months following laryngectomy. They are designed to be comfortable for long-term use.
Laryngectomy tubes comes in many different sizes and lengths. Size is determined by the depth and shape of each individual stoma/trachea. Some tubes are fenestrated for patients using voice prostheses and some are available with special adapters to allow for the attachment of HMEs and speaking valves.
